Day 1
Begin your adventure in Oxford
A captivating city in central southern England.
First, explore Oxford, a captivating city in central southern England, renowned for its prestigious university established in the 12th century. It has 38 colleges that shape its distinctive character, earning it the endearing nickname ‘City of Dreaming Spires’ from poet Matthew Arnold. To begin your adventure, explore University College and Magdalen College off the High Street.
This will provide you with insight into the city’s rich history. Furthermore, the High Street stretches from Carfax Tower, where you can enjoy city views, all the way to the Botanic Garden situated alongside the serene River Cherwell.
Once you’ve explored Oxford, it’s time to discover the medieval market town in England’s West Midlands, celebrated as the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare, one of the most famous writers in the English language.
Shakespeare is known for his timeless sonnets and celebrated plays like ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Hamlet.’ Therefore, the town provides a profound Shakespearean experience.
Moreover, the Royal Shakespeare Company performs his plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and adjacent Swan Theatre on the banks of the River Avon.
Now, it’s time to explore Broadway, often referred to as the “Jewel of the Cotswolds.” This picturesque village, nestled in the heart of the region, is located in the far South East of Worcestershire, near the Gloucestershire border. Consequently, it’s perfectly positioned between Evesham and Moreton-in-Marsh.
Notably, with a population of 2,540 at the 2011 census, Broadway is a hidden gem where you can truly unwind and enjoy your Cotswolds holiday.
Day 2
Exploring the Cotswolds Further
Venturing on to Stow-on-the-Wold...
Continuing your exploration means venturing to Stow-on-the-Wold, a captivating market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire. It perches atop an 800-foot hill and intersects main roads through the Cotswolds.
These include the historic Fosse Way of Roman origin. Historically, Norman lords founded Stow-on-the-Wold to absorb trade from the roads converging there.
As you explore the villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter, you’ll be enchanted by the tiny River Eye, a tributary to the River Windrush. Strolling alongside the stream in Lower Slaughter feels like a privilege, with people actually living here.
Don’t forget to visit Lower Slaughter Mill & café, with a history dating back to the Doomsday Book of 1086. Additionally, Upper Slaughter is equally attractive and holds the unique distinction of being one of only 14 ‘doubly sainted’ villages in England. This means it lost no men during either World War I or II.
Moving forward, visit Tetbury, a town and civil parish inside the Cotswold district in Gloucestershire. It beckons travelers with its rich history and unique charm.
Tetbury lies on the site of an ancient hill fort, where an Anglo-Saxon monastery, probably founded by Ine of Wessex in 681, once stood. Notably, the population of the parish was 5,250 in the 2001 census, increasing to 5,472 at the 2011 census.
To conclude your Cotswolds adventure, head to Castle Combe, a village and civil parish within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Wiltshire, England.
It is located about 5 miles north-west of Chippenham, and historically, this village was once home to a castle, although it was demolished centuries ago.
